Today I start my short blog series, 5 Things You Didn’t Know (About My Characters). Today we focus on the secondary character with a big attitude, Prince Pedibastet of The Common Kingdoms Series.
First Appearance: The Royal Gift.
Last Appearance: Yannick
Fact One: he was the runt of the litter.
As a kitten, he was the smallest of the bunch. When Queen Bastet chose to abandon him, King Cray took Pedibastet and hand reared him. As he grew big enough to play with his siblings, his constant sneak play attacks on them caught his mother’s eye. When King Cray turned down the offer of being Pedibastet’s siblings’ chosen human, he forced Bastet’s paw to accept Prince Pedibastet as her heir, as the king accepted his request.
Fact Two: he refuses to sit in anyone’s laps except for a few.
As the Prince of the Cats, Prince Pedibastet is often looking for ways to show he is different to the cats he represents. As a result, he avoids being considered a “lapcat”. He will only sit in Aldora’s, Raneth’s and Lemuela’s laps. Later on in the series, he will also sit in Rose’s.
Fact Three: he likes apple and cinnamon porridge.
For breakfast every day, Cray has apple and cinnamon porridge. When the king is not looking, sometimes Pedibastet will lick up a bit for his own pleasure.
Fact Four: he likes sunbathing on the palace roof.
Pedibastet has found that the best way to enjoy the sun is to laze on the roof, near enough to the edge that he can see any visitors arriving.
Fact Five: he often sneaks extra milk drinks from Leal, Cray’s head servant.
When Pedibastet was younger, he became overweight enough that Cray banned yoghurt from the palace, and put in place a three bowls of milk a day only policy for Pedibastet. As an adult, his weight is an acceptable level. So when Pedibastet constantly annoys the head servant of the royal palace, Leal, for milk, the servant gives in.
Bonus Fact: he nearly wasn’t in the series.
In 2013, I was concerned that literary agents didn’t like The Royal Gift in part due to the talking cat in it. A few people changed my mind, so he and the rest of the talking Giften cats stayed.
